At Samsung’s recent Galaxy Unpacked event in New York, the tech giant unveiled its latest foldable flagship device, the Galaxy Z Fold7.

The Fold7 device wasn’t just about showcasing new innovative advancements, but also about achieving the slimmest foldable design. It has been re-engineered with user feedback in mind to elevate the user experience.

During the Unpacked event, Samsung also released the new Flip7 and Galaxy Watch8.

At a wafer-thin 4.2mm when open, it’s the slimmest and most portable Z Fold to date, and that of any book-styled foldable. And, even when folded, at 8.9mm, the Fold7 is 3mm thinner than its predecessor.

Both the generous 8.0-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display and the refined 6.5-inch cover screen offer more expansive viewing areas. The main display boasts a vibrant resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, promising that all content, from video calls to streaming and reading, will look crisp and fluid.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7’s specifications reveal a true performance beast.

Powering the device is the cutting-edge Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor. This custom-tuned chipset delivers exceptional Snapdragon 8 Elite performance, promising to make light work of demanding applications, intensive gaming, and increasingly complex on-device AI tasks, as well as Gemini Live.

With configurations offering up to 16GB of RAM (12GB base model) and a generous 1TB of storage, the Z Fold7 provides ample power and space for all types of users.

However, with the top-spec 16GB/1TB model exceeding $2,000, it remains to be seen how many people opt for a smartphone costing more than many notebooks and tablets.

A groundbreaking 200MP wide-angle camera, which Samsung says will capture 4x more detail than before.

Complementing the pro-grade camera is a 12MP ultrawide and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. The advanced ProVisual engine further refines image quality across various lighting conditions, making every snap picture-perfect.

It wouldn’t be a smartphone launch without AI features, and the Fold7 is packed full of them. Galaxy AI features include real-time language translation and AI-powered content creation, which are seamlessly integrated with the redesigned One UI 8.

With Gemini Live now boasting enhanced multimodal AI, Fold7 users can effortlessly type or speak contextual questions directly into the interface, getting instant answers and insights without the need to switch between apps or even articulate every thought; simply showing Gemini what’s on screen via screen sharing or through the camera provides immediate, real-time understanding.

Meanwhile, for those gamers, Circle to Search can now deliver gaming tips precisely when and where they’re needed, allowing players to circle an item on screen and receive instant results, walkthroughs, or tactical advice in a floating view that maintains a smooth, uninterrupted experience.

The durability hasn’t been overlooked either, with Advanced Armor Aluminium in the frame and hinges, alongside Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the cover display, providing enhanced resilience for daily use.

While the 4,400mAh battery capacity remains consistent with previous models, the increased efficiency of the new processor means you can still rely on dependable Galaxy Z Fold7 battery longevity for a full day’s use.

However, all this goodness does hide one significant omission. No S-Pen support!

It appears in the pursuit of thinness, Samsung has chosen to win the battle for slimmest foldable over a feature that many of its users want, and one that makes so much sense for book-style foldables.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 starts at $1,999/£1,799 for the 256GB model and $2,119/£1,899 for the 512GB model. Colour options vary by market.
