Sonos Move Portable Speaker
I’ll be honest, I’ve waited a long time to be able to talk about a Sonos portable speaker on {Tech} for Travel, and now the Move has given me a chance.
The first travel speaker from the Audio specialists may not be the smallest but the expectation on sounding great is high.
Features
Sonos built its brand on indoor, wirelessly connected, high-end speakers and that is where the Move starts. If you are lucky enough to have a Sonos speaker network at home the Move can be added to it just like any other in the range.
Where it differs is when you lift it from the included charging base ring, switch from WiFi to Bluetooth and venture outdoors.
Sonos takes its first step out of the home with Sonos Move, a durable, battery-powered smart speaker for great sound indoors, outdoors, and on the go.
Sonos
Battery Powered Sonos Sound
With an internal lithium-ion battery big enough to deliver up to 10 hours of playback from a single charge, the Move can even stay in standby mode for 5 days.
If you are travelling the Move can be charged via the USB-C port. There are no confirmed times for how long it takes to charge the Move on either the included base or USB.
Sonos has stated the battery is replaceable but should have around a 900 charge lifecycle.

Audio & Controls
There is a part of me that thinks/hopes Sonos avoided the Portable speaker market until they could deliver a device that met their very high standards.
Inside the Move has Dual Class D Digital Amplifiers, a tweeter and a far-field microphone array and a mid-woofer. All of which, when combined, promises to take Sonos dedication to great audio, on the road.
To the top of the speaker, there are Capacitive Touch control buttons for navigating audio playback and a mute button for the microphone.
It’s also possible to control the Move Portable Speaker with the Sonos App (Android | Apple)
Limitations
With such good build quality and the large price tag, you wouldn’t expect any drawbacks, but there are a few.
The Move will work better indoors on your WiFi network.
It’s here the speaker can offer voice control & assistance with both Alexa and Google built-in. Or offer AirPlay 2 for Apple users and receive software updates without any intervention.
When you switch over to Bluetooth the features stay at home and that great audio experience comes with you, wherever in the world that might be!
Specifications
For some, the size and weight of the Move are going to be an issue. At 3kg and nearly 10 inches tall, it is far from the most portable of speakers.
However, if you already have a Sonos system at home, the Move might be a good addition, and then to accompany you on those road or camping trips?
