Following on from the Priv, Blackberrys first Android powered model released last year. The Canadian company are back with their second handset on the Android platform.
Dtek50 by Blackberry
This week Blackberry announced the Dtek50, their new Android powered device; and being slated as the most secure Android device on the market.
Firstly, this is not an all-new handset. The model is a rehashed version of the Alcatel Idol4 device, with some under-the-hood tuning and a different rear rubber case, otherwise, it is a rebadged model. However, it is the Blackberry badge and a cheap way to go to market with a very good offering!
Although Blackberry still supports their BB10 OS there is no doubt that their future is sure with Android OS and Blackberry-loaded apps. The Dtek50 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow installed, which brings with it full access to Google Play. This fills Blackberry’s biggest hole on their native BB10, a lack of apps.
This is not a one side relationship though. Blackberry are still considered the most secure brand in mobile. The loaded Blackberry features within this Android offering support the company’s claim to this being the most secure Android handset ever released!
The Dtek by Blackberry app comes pre installed on the device and polices the apps on your device. It can tell you when and how often an app has accessed your camera, mic, contacts etc.
Sadly, ditching the brilliant Blackberry physical keyboard this 5.2 inch touchscreen device does come with some good stats:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor.
- 16gb internal storage, expandable to 2 terabyte!!!
- 13mp Auto focus camera at the rear.
- 8mp front facing camera.
- Android 6.0 OS
Blackberry have also committed to a zero day delay on delivering Google’s monthly security patches. This is great news for the enterprise customers who Blackberry are pitching to.
The biggest let down with the Priv was the price. At £549 it was at the same price range as the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy handsets. A brave move for a new partnership!
The Dtek50 however is available for pre order at £275, with shipping due to begin in early August. That is a great price for the Blackberry name and security all wrapped up in a full Android OS.
I still miss my BB9900 thought!
