For more than thirty years, TomTom has been guiding drivers on roads worldwide. From those early sat-navs suction-cupped to the windscreen to today’s global mapping platforms, the Dutch brand has become a steady companion for motorists.

By tapping into hundreds of millions of connected devices, TomTom has built one of the clearest real-time views of traffic and road conditions.

Now, the company is putting that expertise back into drivers’ hands with the launch of a new device, simply named Tom, a compact speed camera warning device that works in tandem with the free TomTom app.

The subject of speed cameras is never straightforward. While their role is to encourage safer driving, they often cause the opposite when a motorist brakes sharply at the last second to avoid a fine. They also become an additional annoyance for drivers in new cities using a rental car, so a pocket-sized insurance policy like the Tom could be a welcome addition to anyone’s travel tech kit.

Tom Features Speed Camera Warning Device

Rather than competing for space on a dashboard already crowded with screens, Tom takes a different approach. The square device uses an LED ring and a buzzer to signal upcoming speed cameras, traffic problems and roadside hazards. It wakes up automatically when the car starts moving and performs its task without requiring a destination to be entered.

At the heart of Tom is the company’s vast data network. Billions of observations are collected daily from vehicles around the globe, providing live updates on traffic flow, speed limits, and incidents. The device connects to this stream through the TomTom app via Bluetooth, pulling its intelligence.

No menus to navigate, no tapping at the phone, just a ring of light and a quick buzz when something ahead deserves attention.

Tom has several different LED colours to cover various scenarios. An amber light warns of a change of road speed, while a yellow light warns of crashes and obstacles, and a red light alerts of upcoming traffic.

Speed cameras, both static and the money-grabbing mobile variety, are highlighted with a blue light.

And, if a user wants to warn other Tom owners of a new traffic jam or crash, a tap of the Tom device will update the TomTom network.

TomTom App

The companion app is where the rest of the story plays out.

Free on both iOS and Android, it offers full navigation for those who want routing, featuring TomTom’s well-known maps, live traffic coverage, and speed limit data.

It also provides the complete database of speed camera locations across Europe and North America.

TomTom

Tom by TomTom looks like a perfect solution for drivers who don’t want to strap a phone to the windshield or invest in a bulky sat-nav; now they have another option.

It’s portable, reasonably priced and always kept current by the app.
