Unlimited Free Messaging on Lufthansa Wi-Fi

Lufthansa has announced that passengers on all its long-haul flights can now send and receive messages free of charge using popular messaging apps. This service is available across all travel classes and applies to every intercontinental route, including destinations in North America, South America, Africa, and Asia.

The messaging function operates through Lufthansa’s FlyNet Wi-Fi system, enabling passengers to stay in touch using WhatsApp, iMessage, and Facebook Messenger without the need to purchase a paid data plan.

To access the free messaging tier, travellers connect their device to the FlyNet network after take-off and log in using a Lufthansa Miles & More number or an email address linked to a Lufthansa Group Travel ID. If neither is available, passengers can register during the flight.

Once signed in, the free messaging tier becomes available, supporting both text and image messages. The service is specifically for messaging and does not permit browsing the internet, streaming content, or using other data-heavy services.

If full internet access is needed, FlyNet offers additional access tiers. There are two paid options available during long-haul flights. The first is a two-hour internet package priced from €15 or 5,000 Miles & More points. The second is a full-flight package that costs €25 or 8,300 miles.

Both tiers enable general web browsing, email access, and social media use at speeds of up to 4 Mbps. These speeds are adequate for checking emails, loading web pages, or staying active on platforms like Instagram, X, or staying up-to-date on boardingarea.com.

The rollout of this new feature builds on Lufthansa’s previous introduction of free messaging for European short and medium-haul flights, which launched in early 2024 and is available on narrow-body Airbus A320 family aircraft. With today’s update, Lufthansa becomes one of the few international airlines to provide complimentary messaging on both regional and long-haul routes.

The messaging service activates once the aircraft has reached cruising altitude and remains accessible for the entire duration of the flight. Lufthansa continues to upgrade its fleet to expand FlyNet coverage, with plans to enhance both speed and satellite reliability in the future.

Passengers in First Class already receive complimentary full-flight internet access as part of their fare and can continue to enjoy this benefit without changes. For all other cabins, the addition of free messaging levels the playing field when it comes to staying in touch during intercontinental travel.
