Apple had a busy few weeks with not one but two events, launching plenty of new products, including the new iPhone 12 Pro & Pro Max which boasts some much needed upgraded specifications.
The full list of devices announced:
Apple iPhone 12 Pro 2020
The Pro is really beginning to set itself apart from the ‘standard’ iPhone model following on the pattern we’ve seen in both the MacBook and iPad ranges
These new Pro & Pro Max models are now the flagship smartphones for Apple and have an impressive set of specifications to set them apart from the iPhone 12 range.
Apple iPhone 12 Pro Overview
It feels like an age since a new iPhone really felt ‘New’ compared to the previous version.
The new 12 Pro range is by no means drastically different in that 11 Pro owners will be demanding an upgrade, but there is enough new goodness to separate old from new.
5G comes to Apple
It took a while but 5G is now as standard on the 12 Pro and Pro Max devices after a fairly long wait. Although, 5G coverage is still not available everywhere and won’t be until late 2021.
⚬ News: Tooyn, the Last Apple MacBook Charger You’ll Need?
Apple claims this will be the best 5G experience on a smartphone due to having more bands available therefore a broader coverage of 5G networks globally.
US models of the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will use millimeter wave technology which works on a higher 5G wave, resulting some blisteringly fast speeds of up to 4Gbps..
Small but Significant Camera Upgrade
The new LiDAR scanner promises a better overall performance during low light photography. Along with the many benefits for AR which the scanner has been added for, it also brings with it Night Portrait mode and quicker autofocus in low light environments.
Each of the main 3 lenses remains from the 11 Pro series but the 12 Pro specifications now have Dolby Vision HDR video with recording capabilities of up to 60 fps, and 5x optical zoom on the Pro Max.
⚬ Review: Zendure Replace Apple Buds with New ANC ZenPods
All of which should look even better on the new larger displays. The size of both devices has increased slightly to accommodate the new screens, but Apple has again reduced the bezel for a near edge to edge Super Retina XDR display.
New Looks & MagSafe Returns
It’s not just the specifications that are new, the Apple iPhone 12 Pro & Max look different compared to the 11! Not by much, admittedly, but in Apple terms, this is a big shift.
The new stainless steel band has a much straighter edge and houses a matte glass back panel which is finished in one of four new colours. At the front, the displays are coated in a new Ceramic Shield glass for better durability.
Fans of MagSafe, the magnetically attached power connectors on the MacBooks returns 14 years after it was first introduced by Apple.
As a part of the QI wireless charging system the new MagSafe feature on iPhone 12 Pro is going to open up a whole new market of magnetic attachments, accessories and charging devices for the smartphone. Something many users may need as neither the Pro or Pro Max have overly large batteries inside.
Something you’re going to want with 5G and those gorgeous Super Retina XDR displays.
Missing Accessories
And while I’m on the power it’s worth noting all new iPhones from the 12 onwards will no longer ship with a power adapter/plug!
The USB-C to Lightning cable will be included so you’ll not be left totally stranded to charge your new phone. Apple has also taken the decision to leave out the included wired earbuds too.
Stating they have done this to save the planet is all well and good, yet they still kept all 12’s on Lightning Ports instead of USB-C.
The Apple-designed A14 Bionic chip, the fastest chip in a smartphone, powers impressive computational photography features including the all-new Apple ProRAW for more creative control in photos, and enables the first end-to-end Dolby Vision video experience, up to 60 fps.
