During its fall event, Apple released the iPhone 13 series, showcasing new Mini, standard, Pro and Pro max models to replace last year’s model specifications.

The few changes to all four models were small and subtle, with very little to convince iPhone 12, or even 11, owners to make the upgrade. However, the new additions Apple did make are welcome ones.

Gone are the entry-level 64GB models with base storage options now at 128GB, and all four handsets boast improved battery performance over previous iPhones. At the top end, the Pro Max can offer up to 28 hours of power.

Although Apple has upgraded the chip to the newer A15, the headline upgrade for the 2021 iPhone is Cinematic mode.

Following extensive study of cinematography and the powerful use of rack focus, Cinematic mode on iPhone records videos of people, pets, and objects with a beautiful depth effect with automatic focus changes, so anyone can capture cinema-style moments, even if they aren’t a professional filmmaker.

There are only two design changes on both of these models; an ever so slightly smaller notch at the top of the displays, and the rear camera lenses are housed diagonally rather than vertically stacked.

Also, both Purple and Green colour options have been dropped in favour of a new Pink. Some of the colour choices that remained have been tweaked slightly, such as the fresh new Blue hue.

Both the Mini and iPhone 13 have the same 5.4″ and 6.1″ Super Retina XDR displays as before, have 5G connectivity as standard and even the exact specification of Front and Rear cameras as last years handsets!

Once again, the main “upgrade” is in the software for the front and back cameras. The same dual 12MP Wide & Ultra-wide lenses return but now boast smart HDR 4, which improves the dynamic range and picture detail using AI technology and the new Bionic chip.

A welcome addition for 2021 is Cinematic mode. This new mode is similar to the depth control and bokeh effect Apple first gave us around the iPhone 11 but have now made it work, to significant impact, for video. Finally, photo images have also benefitted from an upgrade with Preset and customised preferences called Photographic styles.
