On September 7th, at the ‘Fall Out’ event, the Apple iPhone 14 lineup was launched, alongside Watch 8 & Ultra edition and the new AirPods Pro 2nd Gen. This is a brief overview to highlight the Apple iPhone 14 specifications from the Far Out event.

Apple iPhone 14 Specifications & Overview
As the most significant event in the Apple calendar comes to a close, those who may have been waiting for a great new iPhone might feel somewhat disappointed.
Apart from the colour, they are almost identical in design and styling. As expected, Mini, the smallest and cheapest of the iPhone 12 and 13 range, has been dropped. Replaced instead by the standard iPhone 14.
The full new lineup comprises iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and Pro Max.
But while much of the four new handsets won’t stir much excitement, Apple has at least released a new feature on the Pro models that I genuinely feel is the best addition in many years. Dynamic Island.
Bad News for US Travellers
Yet as one hand gives, the other takes away, and Apple has seen fit to remove the SIM tray on all iPhone 14’s sold in the US. This means all US iPhones will be eSIM only.
This is fine if you don’t leave the US or have a generous roaming plan. But if, like many, you pick up a local SIM wherever you travel for cheaper data bills, with the iPhone 14, you can’t anymore! This may result in higher charges when abroad.
iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus
The entry-level iPhone 14 has a 6.1″ display and the larger Plus, a 6.7″ one, both of which are Super Retina XDR displays. Apple says, with the more prominent display, the Plus will offer more text onscreen using the standard font size. Each display will be covered by ceramic shield glass for better protection.
Along with the identical looks of the iPhone 13 series, the new iPhone 14/Plus both share the same A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13, with improved internal thermal performance. Whilst this is disappointing for anyone looking for a new standard iPhone, the A15 is still incredibly powerful.
There are minor software updates to further improve the dual 12MP rear camera. They now boast a faster aperture and better low light capture for more vibrant colours.
At the front, the same 12MP selfie cam remains yet will benefit from auto-focus and the Apple Photonic Engine to affer better low light photography.
Both models will be capable of recording 4K video up to 60fps, and will come with the new Action Mode for more stable recordings.
New Safety Features
Across all four handsets, Apple has introduced two new safety features. Crash Detection and Emergency SOS.
Crash detection can detect up to 256Gs of impact with a high dynamic range gyroscope and then uses the Emergency SOS feature to automatically notify the emergency services by bringing up the nstandardSOS screen and, if no interaction is made, connects the call.
And, for the first time on iPhone, Apple has introduced Satellite connectivity working with the new safety features and the Find My app!
The iPhone 14 lineup also introduces Emergency SOS via satellite, which combines custom components deeply integrated with software to allow antennas to connect directly to a satellite, enabling messaging with emergency services when outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
Apple
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will come in five new colours; Midnight Black, Blue, Starlight, Purple, and RED (PRODUCT). Amazingly, Apple has dropped the Green option from the 13 series, wne of its best colour schemes in recent years.
iPhone 14 Pro & iPhone 14 Pro Max
Apple needs to set the Pro models apart from the standard handset, and in the 14 series it’s chosen to do this with just two significant differences; one in the hardware and the other, with Apple’s best User interface design in a long time!
iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will have the new A16 Bionic chip, the fastest chip in any smartphone on the market today, capable of 17 Trillion operations per second and has 50% more memory bandwidth than last year’s A15 chip.
Despite the display sizes being the same 6.1″ and 6.7″ options as the standard handsets, the Pro models will have thinner borders and will finally bring Always On display to iPhone.
An area where Apple has held firm is on the rear camera. As Android devices move into triple figures, Apple stuck with just 12MP, and it has always worked well.
14 Pro and Pro Max are turning points as they usher in a new 48MP quad pixel sensor, some 65% larger than iPhone 13 pro.
The main camera array also consists of an Ultra-wide and 2x telephoto lenses, a redesigned 9 LED flash, a much larger 15x Digital Zoom capability and will capture your images in ProRAW at 48MP resolution.
Dynamic Island
To accommodate the 12MP front-facing Selfie camera, Apple has moved away from the old style notch, still used on the standard 14/14 Plus and replaced it with a new pill-shaped cut-out in the display.
This in itself was the basis for so many leaks and rumours in the lead up to the launch, but what Apple did to disguise it, caught most people out.
The black space taken up by the opening is now an interactive bar to keep users updated apps running in the background while using another app. Think of it like Picture in Picture, but with information.
It keeps you viewing your main app and brings non-obtrusive alerts and information from background apps. It can even handle two background apps at the same time.
All the new features found in the standard iPhone 14, such as emergency SOS via satellite and crash detection make it onto the Pro models.
This breakthrough technology also allows users to manually share their location over satellite with Find My when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi connection, providing a sense of security when hiking or camping off the grid.
Apple.
However, Emergency SOS via Satellite will initially only be available to users in North America tnd will come with two years of free service. There’s been no information about ongoing charges or fees for the service.
The new iPhone 14 Pro lineup will come in four colourways, including a new Deep Purple and depending on use, the Pro Max will deliver up to 29 hours of battery, Apple says.
