When I first covered the original CampStove, I loved the idea, the design and how it functioned when in use.
Since then I have seen a few alternatives, some reliant on gas, others fairly bulky. So when BioLite announced a follow-up to the original I was eager to see if they had improved on or tampered with an already great piece of tech!
With Spring starting here in Europe, campers, hikers, mountaineers and those fond of outdoor living will be eager for any device that can help them along the way!
BioLite CampStove 2
Straight away those who own, or are aware of, the original will notice the visible change to the new model, and if like me, you have a weak spot for LED feedback, then you are in for a treat with the CampStove2!
Gone is the single battery indication lights of the original which has now been replaced with 3 individual indicators; Heat, Fans and Battery.
The CampStove2 has 3 core functions each of which now provide a visual feedback on to the new dashboard.
LED Dashboard
Primarily, the CampStove provides heat by burning wood. This cooks your food and, more importantly, prepares your coffee! The first orange LED’s inform you of the heat strength of your fire.
Secondly, are the internal fans. These capture residue heat and perform two tasks. They convert it into electricity via a thermoelectric generator which gives power to the USB ports and charges the internal battery. The air generated by the fans is also fed back into the chamber. This gives a more efficient, smokeless fire. Each of the Blue LED’s represents 1 of the 4 fans.
Finally the green indicator is there to let you know when the internal battery is fully charged.
Internal Battery Pack
Housed at the base of the bright yellow casing is now a 2600 mAh battery pack. This is charged during normal use of the Campstove and can be used without the need of having a fire lit! Just use it like a normal external battery pack!
More Fans, More Power
Previously the CampStove had just two fans powering the thermoelectrics. With two more added, the four fan system now provides better airflow for improved combustion/flame & heat control and puts 50% more power to the USB charging!
With the addition of a battery pack, two extra fans and the LED dashboard, BioLite have managed to keep the CampStove 2 the same weight as the original! That is good design and engineering.
The CampStove 2 is now on sale for £134 plus shipping.
It is worth remembering that a portion of every sale goes to the BioLite Mission in bringing clean cooking and energy to thousands of families across India and sub-Saharan Africa.
