On Wednesday, at the Microsoft Launch event, there was no “new” mobile tech released, but alongside the stunning Surface Studio there was a much improved offering of power to their flagship laptop, the i7.
Microsoft Surface Book i7 (2016)
The hybrid or 2 in 1 flagship laptop from Microsoft has had a make over, mostly to support the new Windows 10 OS, Creators Update, but with big benefits to the true power users too.
First up, the graphics performance has been doubled. Adding an additional fan to stop the device cooking itself from the inside out, it can now handle better video output and support those heavy visual editors when away from the office or on the road.
Which brings u to the new battery. Now, the event only really covered the device when being a laptop and promised 16hrs of power, which, when considering the stronger graphics performance and the power needed to support the i7 processor powering it is an impressive amount. How it performs when in tablet mode is still to be seen.
The full marketing brief reads:
Microsoft also introduced Surface Book with Performance Base, making the most powerful laptop in its class even better. The three new Surface Book models feature 6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 processors and pack more than twice the graphics processing power as the original Surface Book. Plus Surface Book with Performance Base brings 16 hours of battery life3 into the same sleek, versatile design people love. With Surface Book with Performance Base, engineers can spin 3-D CAD models with thousands of parts, designers and developers can render large files quickly, and gamers can play more of their favorite games. No other laptop combines similar battery life, performance and pixels in as lightweight a package.
There is no denying the i7 and other Surface book models are great looking, well designed laptops and with this new release, along with the other new products at the event, Microsoft are going for Apples core users. Those creative people who are heavy Photoshop users or video editors were clearly targeted as the users most likely to own or move to a Surface Book.
There is however, one stumbling block for most. The price. At $2399 it is not cheap. The Surface Book i7 can be pre-ordered now from Microsoft Store and has a release date of 10th November.
