Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones improve an already winning formula by adding 12 mics, studio-grade audio tuning, and real-time adaptive ANC.

Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones
Sony has officially launched the WH-1000XM6, the sixth generation in its acclaimed noise-cancelling headphone series.
Building upon the foundation laid by the WH-1000XM5, the XM6 introduces several enhancements that Sony expects to improve audio quality, noise cancellation, and user convenience.
But these are some big shoes to fill. The WH-1000XM5 headphones were released two years ago and went straight to the top of the must-have Travel gadgets list for frequent fliers.

Features Sony WH-1000XM6 Headphones
At the core of the XM6 is Sony’s new HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3, which promises to deliver up to 7x faster processing than the older QN1 chip. Combined with a new 12-microphone system (up from 8 in the XM5), this upgrade enables real-time adaptive noise control, automatically adjusting to location, movement, and ambient sound levels.
An enhanced Adaptive NC Optimiser now accounts for changes in atmospheric pressure, improving flight performance. There’s also a more refined Auto Ambient Sound Mode, which allows for clearer external cues like train announcements without affecting playback clarity.
The WH-1000XM6 uses the same 30mm dynamic drivers as its predecessor, but swaps out the previous dome material for a high-rigidity carbon fibre composite. This change increases stiffness and reduces distortion, especially at higher volumes.
Support for Hi-Res Audio via LDAC is retained, alongside DSEE Extremeâ„¢, which uses Edge-AI to upscale compressed formats in real-time. This includes music streamed via services like Spotify and YouTube Music.
Call quality is significantly boosted with a new 6-microphone beamforming setup supported by AI voice isolation. Sony claims this new system can more precisely differentiate the user’s voice from surrounding noise, resulting in improved call clarity across all environments.

A dedicated mute button has been added to the right ear cup, improving control during video calls and hybrid work setups.
The precise detection of the twelve optimally places microphones allow the noise cancellation to adapt more precisely to fit you and your environment. Whether you are looking to block out noise on a busy commute or stay focused in the office, your sound experience will be seamless and powerful.

Made for Travellers
The XM6 reintroduces a foldable frame, correcting the fixed design seen on the XM5. This makes the headphones easier to stow in carry-on bags. The new carry case features a magnetic latch and refined interior layout for better accessory organisation.
A wider asymmetrical headband and new soft vegan leather earpads improve comfort. Combined with a slight adjustment in clamping force, the XM6 is built for long-haul comfort.
This is a key inclusion, as long-time owners of the XM5, like myself, will have noticed that the clamping force drops off slightly after constant use.
Interestingly, Sony has opted for Bluetooth 5.3 instead of the latest 5.4 version to increase range, stability, and support for LE Audio and Auracast.

Although not widely used yet, Auracast allows venues like gyms or airports to transmit audio streams, such as announcements or presentations, directly to supported headphones without pairing.
For the first time in the 1000X series, users can now listen while charging, a feature not supported on the XM5.
Despite the processing and connectivity upgrades, Sony maintains a 30-hour battery life with ANC on, or up to 40 hours with it off. Fast charging is still available: a 10-minute top-up provides 5 hours of playback.
While maintaining the core strengths of its predecessor, the XM6 is introducing features that aim to enhance performance and convenience in the audio experience.
