iWalk Link Me Pro Portable Charger Review
Hot on the heels of my recent iWalk PowerGrip Mag review, I draw my attention to the slightly more standard way of charging an iPhone through its lightning port, or for non-Apple owners, USB-C.
While MagSafe is a helpful design and charging interface for iPhone-packing travellers, many seldom need a power boost or top-up until the end of the day.
And, if you’re wondering who those people are, they’ll be the ones enjoying life and not face down in a 6’1″ display three times a minute!
But having a form of portable power when travelling is always a good idea, but not at the expense of a big, bulky power pack weighing you down.
The iWalk Link Me Pro walks that fine line between lightweight and powerful.
Features // iWalk Link Me Pro Portable Charger Review
The iWalk Link Me Pro iPhone charger is a 4,800mAh portable battery pack with two connection points.
On the top is a fixed Lightning port with a protection cap for when it’s not in use and to protect the pins, and the other is a side-mounted USB-C port.
Power output is up to 12W, whilst input for charging the Link Me Pro is at 18W through the dual-use USB-C port.
At the front of the Link Me Pro is a small yet perfectly sized circular LED display that provides the power remaining in the portable charger.
As a reference, at 78mm wide, the iWalk Link Me Pro was the same width as an iPhone 14 Pro with a regular case on.
Charging Performance
As if the headline didn’t give it away, the Link Me Pro delivered a fast and full charge to the iPhone 14 Pro I tested it on.
And, yes charge is singular, as the 4,800mAh capacity was enough to provide just a single full top-up for the 14 Pro that took 2 hours 48 minutes from flat.
The number of charges will vary depending on the model of the smartphone, but as a minimum, on Pro or larger display models, expect just one cycle.
I noticed the charge time was almost exactly the same for iPhone, whether using the fixed Lightning port or USB-C to Lightning cable.
And this was perfectly acceptable as the Link Me Pro is not trying to be anything other than that insurance policy you always keep with you when travelling.
One feature I wasn’t expecting on such a small device, but I was pleasantly surprised to find was Pass-Through charging. Plug the Link Me Pro in to charge via USB-C and connect an iPhone to the Lightning port, and both will charge at the same time!
Design
Frequent travellers will appreciate the iWalk charger’s appeal, thanks to its incredibly compact design and lightweight nature of just 99g. It effortlessly slips into your pocket or backpack, making it practically unnoticeable during your journeys.
However, it does have one flaw that worried me, the fixed Lightning connector. While the iPhone port fits perfectly, even with a case on, it feels surprisingly fragile.
If you accidentally drop your phone with the charger attached, there’s a significant risk that the prong could snap off inside the iPhone, resulting in a costly repair bill!
With this concern, I only used Lightning charging when my iPhone was flat on the table.
Alternatively, charging from the USB-C port with a cable was just as fast, and I found a more secure way to use the iWalk Link Me Pro portable charger.
