APP: Stay.Com is to Close.

15

A little over a year ago I reviewed the brilliant Stay.Com App, which I discovered, mostly by chance during a trip to the US.

Sadly, today, the team announced the App will be closed down!

Stay………. & Go

The App was the foundation for what became a crowd sourced database of hints, tips and advice for travellers visiting over 150 cities.

Its appeal to travellers who used it, was the ability to highlight those little known secrets, in some of the major cities around the world, that could be missed even by the most seasoned of traveller.

The full press release reads:

Hi {Tech} for Travel,

It is with a heavy heart that we are informing you that Stay.comwill close down on 5th of June.

Creating Stay.com has been an adventure, and we’re happy you were part of it. Our community of travelers created some amazing city guides, and we hope we contributed to making your travels even more interesting.

At the end of the month, your travel guides will no longer be available. Guides you would like to keep and use, can be downloaded from this page:

Thanks for the support!

All the best,
the Stay.com team

As you can see a custom link was provided to me, letting me download the bespoke map guides I had built myself within the app.  If you are already a user of the app, you would have received a similar email by now with your registered address containing your custom link.

Given the turn off date is next week I would highly recommend downloading the free app and building up a city guide or two if you have some upcoming travels.  I am struggling to locate the app on iTunes, but the Android version is still accessible.

If you have any questions you can reach the team via Twitter, but for now I wish the team all the best and hope they come back with something new for us.  Stay.com really was a useful and very user-friendly service.

  1. It’s a shame to see such a useful app go away. My go to is roadtrippers. I’d really be in trouble if it went away!

  2. I loved this app. I still have it installed on my iphone. And its still working as before, but you cant add new things as its not updating syncronizing. The map is also working fine. Best map i know without googlemap.

Have not found an app thats better then Stay. Triposo is not good, dont show subwaystations at the map!

    • I don’t think we are alone on feeling that way. This post still gets a huge amount of traffic so clearly it was a much loved app!

I liked the fact I could build my trip up in the weeks leading up to travelling on it. The map was brilliant and the whole user interface experience was well executed.

Watch out for my review on Triposo coming soon!

  3. I was trying to do another guide and I couldn’t, now I understand why. So sad it was so helpful….I recomended it to a lot of people 🙁

  4. Oh no how sad! I’ve loved using this app and have built up personal favorites- it’s been as much a part of my annual holiday as have my photos. I’m so sorry. Unfortunately I didn’t see an email so haven’t exported my data however I guess that’s a nudge to look to the future and new experiences. Good luck with your new endeavors.

  5. Really really sad to see this app has closed. We used it in Venice earlier on this year and it was one of the best apps we have ever used. The interactive map worked offline and in the run up to our trip we had saved lots of places to visit. If it wasn’t for this app, I’m not sure we would have found our way back to the hotel each day!

Can I ask what was the reason for closing down the app? I had recommended it to so many of my friends!

We are visiting New York for the first time this month – does anyone recommend any other apps we can use now that Stay is no longer available?

    Thank you!

    • I understand it was a decision made by the parent company of Stay. It was a great app and tool but possibly not bringing in the revenue needed to justify the cost. I am currently testing five alternatives and will be running reviews on all of them in the new year.

  6. Guides by Lonely Planet (official name for iTunes) looks decent. They have only 177 cities so far, but might be a good start. Stay.com was exceptionally good though! Miss this app so much.
