Apple iPad 7th Gen (2019)

Slightly unexpected, but very welcome, a 7th Gen iPad for 2019 was the first product to be released by Apple during its annual Fall event this week.

Boasting a solid spec list, the new iPad OS software and an attractive price tag, this new tablet could be a popular entry-level model.

It’s even been crafted from 100% recycled Aluminium!

Apple has taken the decision to increase the overall size of the new iPad compared to the 6th Gen and even the smaller Pro model. But with size comes a bigger 10.2″ Retina Display.

Powerwise the 2019 iPad comes with the same Apple A10 Fusion chip as the previous generation, which might not appear to be an upgrade. But, the 7th Gen still provides up to 10 hours of battery usage, even with the new bigger display!

“The new iPad was built to run iPadOS, which introduces powerful new ways to multitask, manage and mark up documents, use Apple Pencil and view more information at a glance on a redesigned Home screen.

Multitasking, or the lack of, has always been an issue for Apple, but they are addressing this in their new iPad OS.

I’ve been running the beta of this for a few weeks now and it has transformed my 2018 iPad Pro.

To enhance the user experience on the new iPad Apple has finally included the Smart Connector to the left edge of the tablet. Now, the iPad can have its own keyboard covers and not rely on Bluetooth connected units.

Support for Apple Pencil is also included but only for the 1st Gen which seems a strange choice.

Both of these added to the multitasking capabilities in the new software, which includes app slide over, split views and a much-improved home screen now give consumers a very real problem.

Cameras on any tablet seem to divide opinions, but I’d argue the front-facing is possibly used more than the rear.

But with the rise of rigs such as the iOgrapher, the iPad transforms into a portable video capturing & editing studio. At the rear is an 8MP camera with the usual Apple photo modes.

In video mode, it can capture 1080p HD video at 30fps with stabilization. At the front is a 1.2MP FaceTime camera.

There is a free one month when you make your first monthly subscription payment.

I was hoping for USB-C and 2nd Gen Apple Pencil support but got neither as the 7th Gen iPad only comes with a Lightning port for charging.

Had Apple included a simple Keyboard cover in the box and iPad would be giving entry-level laptops a run for their money.

  1. Every time Apple updates, I’m tempted to get a new device but I try to control the urge unless I see real significant change. I do like some of the features you present here.

    • I think that’s their biggest problem at the moment. Every year on the iPhone, for example, it is just a modest small tweak to the last model.

This iPad has a reasonable price which is why it could be a good seller.
