Motorola One Zoom

At their #TechLife event during #IFA2019, Lenovo showed off a selection of upgraded devices, but it was the new One Zoom smartphone from their Motorola brand that made the headlines this year

A part of the One family of phones, the original was launched in 2018 and was followed by the One Vision, One Action and now the One Zoom.

Features

The One got off to a bit of a mute start, but as the family grew, Motorola has increasingly brought high-end specs to the mid-market of smartphones.

On the Vision, they delivered a 6.3″ FHD Display and a 48MP camera with Night Vision. Then, more recently, the Action has an industry first, an ultra-wide-angle lens that films landscape when held in portrait mode (and it’s brilliant).

And now the newest member of the One family, the Zoom, has a very impressive 4 Lens Camera array.

From a professional level portrait of your best friend to a clear shot of your favorite band from the furthest row at the concert or even an expansive landscape view at the top of your hike – this industry leading quad camera system gives you optimal shooting flexibility.

Quad Cameras

Camera specs are the new battleground for smartphone makers with flagship handsets constantly trying to get one up on rival brands. Motorola has brought that fight to the mid-market with a Quad Main Camera on the Zoom.

Boasting an impressive 48MP main sensor, a 16MP Ultra-Wide angle lens, an 8MP High-Res Optical Zoom and a 5MP depth sensor.

This is good news for travellers who might want the camera capabilities of the top end models but not some of the other power features they come with! Not to mention the price tags!

Smart Design Front & Back

The 6.4″ Max Vision OLED display is wrapped in precision-crafted Gorilla glass which houses an on-screen fingerprint reader that only appears when needed.

Motorola claims the display will deliver more vibrant colours and support Full HD video playback. During the Tech Life event, the display units were playing demo videos which certainly showed off the capabilities.

However, there is one feature that could split opinions. The Front-facing camera is a notch! Whereas other models in the One range are corner punch-hole style cameras.

At the rear, the Motorola ‘M’ logo can be activated to your notifications and will glow to notify you. A useful feature to stop you picking the phone up every minute to unlock the screen.

Battery Life

Inside, the Motorola One Zoom returns to a more mid-range spec with a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 675 processor, 4GB of RAM and a fairly generous 128GB of storage.

If you don’t need the second of the Dual Sim slots, it can be used for a MicroSD card to expand your storage options.

A final point to note, and one most traveller’s are interested in is the battery power.

I’m just finishing the testing of the One Action which has a smaller 3,500mAh battery and the performance is a full 14-hour day and still, around 20% remaining.

The One Zoom has a bigger 4,00mAh battery pack, admittedly with a bit more to power. But, if it can perform on par with the Action, the Zoom has plenty to offer travellers who rely on their smartphone to capture their trips.

Specifications

I had a short test of the One Zoom during the Tech Life event. The Android 9 OS appeared clean of bloatware and ran smoothly whilst the camera showed lots of potential even under all the studio lights.
