TECH News: Samsung Galaxy Note7

Yesterday afternoon at several different locations (NYC, Rio, London) Samsung released their latest handset.

Samsung Galaxy Note7

The new Note7 is a perfectly symmetrical dual edge phone made from premium products and powerful specs. Personally, I’m no fan of the Phablet, but there is no denying this is a powerhouse of a smartphone.

The big feature on this release is the biometric option of a built in infrared iris scanner.  Using their own algorithm, built over 5 years of testing you can now unlock your phone with just a glance.

But all that hard work does not stop there.  The new iris scanner has been baked into all features on the phone where you would want the highest levels of security.  This includes the Secure Folder. It is a place you can store files and apps you do not wish others to see or use.  Someone may borrow your phone, but without your iris they will not have any access to the Secure folder. You can even make it invisible on the home screen!

Security will become more common place as smartphones continue to evolve and regardless of opinion on Blackberry they are still considered the market leader in it.  Just look at their recent Dtek50 handset.

The main feature for most Phablet fans however is the stylus, or in this case, the S pen.  The launch covered the S pen extensively and showed off some great features and how easy it is to use while on the phone.  The “highlight to translate” was effortless.  It is what sets the Note7 above others in this range and is not an add on or needs to be charged.

The handset itself is a great looking smartphone, that really does not look that big in the hand.  It is water resistant to 5ft and for up to 30 mins, this includes the S pen and port for which it is housed.  It comes with a HDR dynamic display, console quality games from Google Play and utilises the same camera as the S7, which most considered to be best on the market.

The base memory has been doubled from the last model to 64gb and comes with an expandable slot allowing to boost storage upto 256gb. It is 30% more powerful than the last model and will last longer thanks to the largest battery they have ever made.  The 3.5mm headphone port remains! and there is a USB C connector which will come with an adapter for backward compatibility.

If you are thinking of upgrading or making the move over to Samsung the Note7 also comes with the Smart switch app.  This allows seamless switching from another handset handset. Finally, to sweeten the deal, the Note7 comes with 15GB of free storage in the Samsung cloud.

There is no official UK pricing as yet but expect to be paying around £550+ sim free.  All the main carriers will be stocking and offering the Note7 on contracts.  Pre order opens on August 16th and will be available by 2nd September in Blue, Black or Silver.
