Announced at the end of 2021 and launched at the start of the following year, the Edifier MP100 Plus Portable Bluetooth Speaker received global recognition from the iF Design awards and was listed as a CES 2022 Innovation Awards Honoree.
It did have one drawback on launch; it was hard to find in stock and/or had availability if it was listed.
But after putting this Bluetooth speaker through its paces during a short trek across the Scottish Highlands, it proved itself to be an outstanding audio companion in the great outdoors.

The MP100 Plus is a palm-sized Bluetooth portable speaker that Edifier has designed to survive the outdoors, whether hiking, mountaineering, or just lazing around on the beach.
Instead of packing the MP100 Plus with all the latest features, Edifier has given this portable speaker only what it needs to be an excellent choice at a very aggressive price point.
Weighing only 185g, this lightweight device has dual speakers and a 5″ subwoofer concealed between its nylon front mesh and a hard plastic base that provides up to 68W of output.
The MP100 Plus comes in three colour options; Lake Green, Forest Green and Black.
Around its rim, the MP100 Plus has a sturdy built-in nylon rope that forms a loop for hanging the speaker up or attaching it to a backpack or carabiner.
There’s no app support from Edifier for the MP100 Plus; honestly, it’s not an issue. Other than using it on a beach or by the pool, you will not have your phone to hand while listening to it unless you’re skipping tracks.
Edifier has utilised the pebble-like shape of the MP100 Plus with only four control buttons which are easily accessible for left or right-handers; Bluetooth pairing, Power on/off, volume Up and Volume down.
The MP100 Plus boasts the latest Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity and has a single USB-C sealed port to charge the internal 1,500mAh battery for 9 hours of playback per full charge.
Because Edifier has added a thick rubber stopper over the USB-C charging port and the speaker is sealed all the way around, the MP100 Plus has been awarded an IPX7 Waterproof rating.
This means the speaker is dust resistant and can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for no longer than 30 minutes.
Simple Controls, Stunning Audio
Thanks to the latest Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity pairing the MP100 Plus to my iPhone 14 Pro was straightforward and took meer seconds to complete. As with other Edifier speakers I’ve had the pleasure to review, the MP100 Plus has a lovely bassy tune when turned on to let you know it’s ready to go.
There is a small blue led at the base of the loop, but it’s easy to miss. The speaker starts in pairing mode on the first use, or a press of the Bluetooth button gets you there, too, and the speaker will appear in the device list on the device you’re pairing the speaker with.
I didn’t miss the absence of any tailored app, such as the brilliant one Edifier has for its NeoBuds Pro Earbuds.
Each of the four buttons is under the surface of the plastic base shell, therefore, has no visible moving parts, which helps with the waterproofing of the speaker. And they were just in the right place where my fingers naturally rested when holding the speaker.
Outdoors Loud
With the great outdoors all around me and no neighbours to upset, I didn’t hold back and went straight to full volume.
IT. IS. LOUD.
It shouldn’t be, as it’s so tiny at only 95mm diameter and with little to no distortion at its maximum output. I was over 20 meters away before the Scottish winds drowned out my music.
Closer up, hanging from my backpack and at a more reasonable mid-control bar level, the MP100 Plus Bluetooth speaker delivered clear sound with a very satisfying amount of bass.
I often complain when a device or gadget doesn’t come with a travel pouch, yet Edifier has made this speaker to last. The review unit is still looking as good as new!
