During its fall event, Apple released the iPhone 13 series, showcasing a new Mini, standard, Pro and Pro max models to replace last year’s 12 models.

Apple iPhone 13 Series

The few changes to all four models were small and subtle, with very little to convince iPhone 12, or even 11, owners to make the upgrade. However, the new additions Apple did make are welcome ones.

Gone are the entry-level 64GB models with base storage options now at 128GB, and all four handsets boast improved battery performance over previous iPhones. At the top end, the Pro Max can offer up to 28 hours of power.

Although Apple has upgraded the chip to the newer A15, the headline upgrade for the 2021 iPhone is Cinematic Mode.

The most advanced pro camera system ever on iPhone; Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion; a massive leap in battery life; A15 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone; an advanced 5G experience; and so much more

iPhone 13 Pro & Pro Max

At first glance, the 13 Pro and Pro Max handsets look almost identical to the 12s with just a fraction of a millimetre or two in size difference, but Apple has added some weight and for a good reason.

The 13 Pro now boasts up to an additional 8 hours of battery power compared to the previous model and, when fully spec’ed up, you can now choose a new 1TB of storage.

And, Apple has addressed one of the big points Samsung handsets have always had over the iPhone, the display.

For 2021 the Pro has a new ProMotion Super Retina XDR display with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. To keep the display looking good, it’s covered in a new Ceramic Shield front cover that Apple says is “tougher than any smartphone glass” to keep the display looking good.

The same new A15 chip used in the Mini and 13 powers both Apple Pro models and is credited for the enhancements to the software powering the new camera features on this year’s handsets.

However, whilst the cameras appear the same, all three lenses on the primary rear camera have been upgraded with bigger sensors and a larger aperture for improved performance in low-light shots.

Both models get a bump up to Smart HDR 4, which will deliver brighter, more detailed images and the Pro Max increases its digital zoom up to 6x. Finally, both Photographic Styles and Cinematic Mode are introduced to the 2021 Pro models for the camera upgrades.

Cinematic Mode brings depth effect to the video, and with the improved lens capturing in 1080p at 30fps in this Mode, your travel videos will start looking even more professional.

Power Boost

It’s worth noting the boost in battery capacity too. Yes, there are a couple of extra grams to the overall weight, but these handsets are light enough already and with up to 8 additional hours of power compared to the 12 Pro, this really will be a welcome addition.

These bigger batteries are once again supporting QI Wireless and MagSafe charging along with a Lightning Port.

Maybe next year, Apple might give us USB-C!

  1. Great info and update on the Apple event. I’ve been thinking about getting an I Phone, so might do that now. Good its got 128 GB storage now, I was considering 256 GB, but I don’t think I’d need all that really. What would you suggest is best? Also, I understand with the I Phone 13 you don’t get a charger. I’ve never had an I Phone, so don’t have an old charger, can I use the one for my Mac Air or I Pad Air?
