Garmin do a great range of wearable tech. Unlike some brands where its a ‘one size fits all’ approach to the design and then jazzed up by a different strap. Garmin have a selection of physical devices to choose from all of which I got to explore and try at #CES2018 in January.
This week they have added to that range, with an upgrade to last years base model vívoactive 3!
Garmin vívoactive 3 Music
The vívoactive 3 fitness tracker is a good all-rounder for people wanting to be active, exercise and track various sporting activities. But, as it, and other wearables continue to add more tech to their line ups, these wrist strapped computers have a valuable part to play for travellers!
With the inclusion of music to the vívoactive 3, it could be time to let this device take some of the strain from your smart phone when on the go!
Garmin vívoactive 3 Music Features
There really are only two main changes from the base model; Music and dimensions! Garmin have added 3.5GB of onboard storage to their fitness tracker which will give you space for around 500 music tracks, podcasts or audiobooks.
Alternatively, you can store offline playlists from iHeartRadio (US users only) or Deezer, if you have subscription accounts with either of these services. But this will come in the form of a software update, hopefully soon, as Deezer is not available at the time of launch.
To achieve this new functionality, Garmin have had to increase the size on the Music model to 13.6mm, a whole 1.9mm bigger than the base vívoactive 3. Hardly a show-stopper!
It is worth reminding ourselves of what this fitness tracker/smartwatch can do beyond the music!
The vívoactive 3 Music has Garmin Pay, a mobile payment solution that works anywhere Contactless payments are accepted. You can pair a credit or debit card to your device via the Garmin App (Android | Apple | Windows), then be secure in the knowledge you should never be caught short again!
Garmin have their own App store called ConnectIQ. Here you can find a huge selection of watch faces or skins, for your device. There are many bespoke apps, such as Uber ETA, Find My Car and Maps Nav all worth a try!
If you like to take your training with you when you travel then the preloaded workouts can help you achieve this, or build and store your own custom workouts. There are preloaded gym workouts for Strength Training, Cardio Training, Elliptical Training, Stair Stepping, Floor Climbing, Indoor Rowing and Yoga.
All of this and without the need to keep your smartphone with you. Thanks to built-in GPS, you can leave your phone behind and let your vívoactive 3 Music do all the work. Then just sync the device with your smartphone afterwards.

The only downside, if you can call it that, with opting for the Music model is that you lose your colour options. With the base model you have 4 styles to choose from, but with the Music, you can only have Black.
